Held each July in the De Schorre park, Tomorrowland is more than just an electronic dance music (EDM) festival; it’s a cultural gathering, a sensory spectacle, and a celebration of art, music, and connection. Founded by brothers Manu and Michiel Beers, Tomorrowland has grown exponentially from its humble beginnings, evolving into a world-renowned event with a legacy of mesmerizing themes, record-breaking attendance, and electrifying performances.
BEGINNINGS AND RAPID RISE (2005–2009)
The first edition of Tomorrowland was held on August 15, 2005, with artists like Armin van Buuren and Coone setting the stage for the festival’s future. In its early years, Tomorrowland expanded both in duration and scale, drawing attention from electronic music fans worldwide. By 2009, attendance had skyrocketed to 90,000, and the festival introduced its first theme, “Masker (Mask).” These early editions were defined by Tomorrowland’s commitment to creating immersive experiences transforming stages into works of art and introducing attendees to fantasy realms.
BUILDING A GLOBAL REPUTATION (2010–2015)
Between 2010 and 2015, Tomorrowland grew into a household name in the festival scene, offering attendees three full days of performances by top tier DJs like Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Tiesto, and Hardwell. Each year brought new and extravagant themes, from “The Tree of Life” in 2011 to “The Secret Kingdom of Melodia” in 2015. Tickets began to sell out in mere minutes, with demand so high that Tomorrowland introduced “Global Journey” packages to accommodate fans traveling from across the globe. The festival’s unique themes and dedication to theatrics won it international acclaim, as it repeatedly secured the title of “Best Music Event” at the International Dance Music Awards.
EXPANDING BEYOND BELGIUM
Tomorrowland’s success spurred its expansion, and in 2013, the festival ventured beyond Belgium for the first time with TomorrowWorld in the U.S. state of Georgia. Soon after, Tomorrowland Brasil was launched in 2015. Though these spin offs were short lived, they marked the start of Tomorrowland’s ambition to create global connections. Since 2019, the winter edition, Tomorrowland Winter, has added a magical, snowy backdrop in Alpe d’Huez, France, drawing festival goers to a unique alpine experience.
A MILESTONE CELEBRATION (2014)
In 2014, Tomorrowland marked its tenth anniversary by doubling the celebration with two consecutive weekends for the first time. Featuring a lineup nearly identical on both weekends, this expansion catered to the insatiable demand of Tomorrowland’s fanbase. For its tenth anniversary, Tomorrowland also partnered with MTV to produce a documentary capturing the spirit of the festival. A special classical hymn was even composed by Hans Zimmer, adding a new level of artistry to the festival’s already vibrant experience.
TOMORROWLAND’S CONTINUED GROWTH AND VIRTUAL EDITIONS
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges, leading to the festival’s cancellation in 2020 and again in 2021. However, Tomorrowland innovatively adapted to the times by launching “Tomorrowland Around the World,” a virtual festival using advanced digital technology. This online experience allowed fans to immerse themselves in the festival from their homes, with Unreal Engine creating fantastical, interactive environments.
With the easing of pandemic restrictions, Tomorrowland made a triumphant return in 2022, featuring three weekends for the first time. The theme, “The Reflection of Love,” emphasized the festival’s core values of unity and positivity, resonating deeply with fans after a long hiatus. By 2023, Tomorrowland secured a historic 66-year agreement with Antwerp, Boom, and Rumst to continue holding the festival at De Schorre, solidifying its place as a Belgian cultural cornerstone.
THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY (2024)
In 2024, Tomorrowland celebrated its 20th anniversary, welcoming 400,000 attendees over two weekends. This edition was an homage to two decades of music, friendship, and community, uniting fans from all over the world under a shared love for electronic dance music. Performances from EDM heavyweights and dazzling stage designs once again showcased why Tomorrowland remains the pinnacle of music festivals.
